The national Māori flag, or Tino Rangatiratanga…

is an important design for all New Zealanders, especially the New Zealand Māori people. This is an unofficial, yet recognised flag to acknowledge the Māori people’s place in the country, and is flown alongside the New Zealand flag on important occasions such as Waitangi Day.

Now you can own a Tina Rangatiratanga (t-shirt/towel/hoodie etc) and show your support for our Māori brothers and sisters!

The Tino Rangatiratanga flag was chosen through a nationwide consultation process with 80% choosing this Māori flag over a number of alternatives.

The Tino Rangatiratanga flag design has strong Symbolism, with three main elements to the national Māori flag, representing the three realms:

Te Korekore, potential being (black, top)

Te Whai Ao, coming into being (red, bottom)

Te Ao Mārama, the realm of being and light (white, centre).

The koru is symbolic of a curling fern frond; representing the unfolding of new life, hope for the future and the process of renewal.

The national Māori flag was developed by members of the group Te Kawariki in 1989, and unveiled at Waitangi on the 6th of February 1990.

Grab your own Tina Rangatiratanga (t-shirt/towel/hoodie etc) and show your support for our Māori brothers and sisters!
