Grab yourself a a Silver Fern t-shirt and show your support for all things New Zealand!
Living in the UK for 20 years people would often ask me which team I support. They were referring to Football, but I always responded with ‘The All Blacks!’
It stopped any fights about supporting the wrong Soccer team, and showed where my real loyalties lie!
Of course, the Silver fern represents more than just the best sporting teams in the world like the All Blacks, the Black Caps and the Silver Ferns, it’s a symbol for New Zealand that goes back until nearly the founding of our nation.
The first use of the Silver Fern emblem can be traced back to 1888 and 1889 with the New Zealand Natives Rugby tour of the British isles, Australia and New Zealand. This was perhaps the first incarnation of our world famous All Blacks!
In 1899 the Silver Fern symbol was used again, this time in connecting with New Zealand soldiers taking part in the Boer war in South Africa. This continued into the First and Second World Wars, as the New Zealand soldiers sported the Silver Fern on a black background. And of course where Kiwis go we soon find Kiwi-friendly watering holes, and these pubs and bars soon became adorned with Silver Fern graffiti to indicate a good choice to grab a cold one!
Now you can own a Silver Fern (t-shirt/towel/hoodie etc) and show your support for great New Zealand sports teams and our military forefathers too!
*disclaimer, this t-shirt is not made in New Zealand, but it’s about the sentiment right!
